ALAN WARLORD from the time of the Hunnic Empire (5th century CE). Wearing the Kispek helmet (replica made by Foederati reenactment group), and a Sasanian sword based on finds from the Caucasus, with a Chinese jade scabbard slide based on finds from Alan, Sarmatian and Hunnic graves. The dagger is from the Zaragij necropolis, also in the Caucasus (replicated by D’Artkaci: https://dartkaci.com/ ). The tunic is made of Sasanian silk (reconstructed by Kazar Bazar https://kazarbazar.com/ ), and the belt buckles and plaques are based on finds from Klin-Yar, in the Caucasus.

THE ALANS were a nomadic people from the Central Asian steppes who migrated to the Caucasus during the early Common Era, where their modern direct descendants, Ossetians, still live today. The Alans spoke an East Iranic language descended from, or closely related with, the language spoken by the Saka / Scythians. Alanic was also part of the same Iranic subfamily as Sarmatian, Sogdian and Bactrian. The arrival of the Huns to the Pontic Steppe pushed part of the Alans into Europe, where they started splitting into different groups. The Alans who stayed in the Caucasus became part of the Hunnic confederation, and those who migrated west joined either the Roman army or the Germanic tribes that were invading the Roman Empire. A coalition of Goths and Alans annihilated a Roman army at the Battle of Adrianople (378), where the Eastern Roman emperor Valens was killed. Later they settled in parts of Gaul, and eventually migrated to Hispania, where they founded their own kingdom, which lasted until they were pushed to Africa by the Visigoths. In North Africa, the Alans coexisted with the Germanic Vandals, with whom they sacked Rome in 455 AD.
