"Печать дракона"

The Dragon's Seal.

Chapter 1

He arrived at dawn, when I had already screamed and cried and bid farewell to the world. He emerged from the thicket, covered in leaves, with green streaks on his leather armor.

Although I had periodically lapsed into unconsciousness, I suddenly perked up and even found the strength to call out softly. When he saw me standing by the stone pillar, my arms awkwardly raised, he even seemed surprised. He came closer, probably to make sure I wasn't a ghost. I wanted to say something welcoming, but my throat was dry. Then he, truly a holy man, pulled out a flask and held it to my lips. In the dim moonlight, his face seemed young and smooth, as if carved from gokki wood, and only later, during the day, did I discern the marks of countless battles on it.

"Maybe you should cut the chains?" I ventured to suggest once I'd had my fill. "He could come at any moment, after all. And I wouldn't want to be his breakfast."

"And don't dragons feed on young, unmarried girls, without vice?" he asked, and for the first time I heard his voice: low, but without the hoarseness that all these dragon hunters are guilty of.

"Virgins, yeah," I agreed. "It's just that they're all gone in our village. Lately, our girls, before they've even had a chance to get 'Eve's curse,' sometimes run off to the hayloft with the first man they meet, just to avoid being added to the next victim's list."

"I see," he chuckled, and I was struck by his "glorious" smile. A grin like that would probably give the enemy the hiccups, but my stomach turned hot, and I crossed my legs, to avoid embarrassment. "Did you think the dragon wouldn't care whose virgin bones it was crunching under its teeth, a boy's or a girl's?"

"Who knows. Still, untie me. Maybe we'll have time to escape."

"Then the dragon will fly into the village and burn the harvest. That was the deal, right? You give him a beautiful maiden every month, and he leaves you alone?"

"How do you know?" I admired his insight. "Well, he'll burn it! Serves them right!"

"Wow! When they dragged the young girls into the mountains, you didn't object?"

A sword clanged over my head, and the chains fell, slapping me across the ear. I scratched my bruised ear and rubbed my numb hands. "My shirt and all... May I know the savior's name? I'm Andriy."

He looked at me and thought for a moment. Then, reluctantly, he said.

"Brand. Brand of Lucang."

"I've heard of you!" I exclaimed happily. "Did our people really fork out for a dragon hunter?"

"Why would they need you then?"  chuckled Brand and headed into the cave. At the entrance, he pulled a small glass vessel from the pouch on his belt. There was a click, and shadows danced on the stone walls.

It was scary to follow him. Brand's long hair, pulled back in a ponytail, curled down his back like dark snakes. He walked without any fear, as if he were at home. At that moment, for a second, I thought I should run away while I still had the chance.

"The elders of your village are as greedy as those very dragons. What did he ask for? Gold or maidens, I take it? They were stingy with gold, unlike the maidens: one less, one more."

He didn't even look back, certain that I was following him. And he was right: I was equally terrified of staying here and of descending the mountain alone.

"Well, yes, when a dragon appeared in the mountains a few years ago, our elders were terribly alarmed. They sent a delegation to the dragon. He offered a reward for not ruining the crops and eating the cows. He also promised protection from robbers. And the maidens, well, that's just how it is: they sacrificed themselves for the common good."
