Story 23. A First Floor Mix Up in Boston - новая безумная история английского разговорника и жизни

In Boston, a young woman who had lived for years on the ground floor decided to move to a new apartment. She contacted a realtor and got a message: 

— Sorry, I won’t be able to join you for the showing. The place is open, it’s on the first floor, door on the left.

She went straight to what she thought was the first floor — forgetting that in the U.S. the “first floor” is the ground level. She climbed one flight of stairs and entered an apartment with the door unlocked.

Inside, she saw a cozy living room, smelled fresh coffee, and noticed a baseball game playing on TV. Suddenly, a small terrier ran out barking happily. Then a neighbor appeared holding grocery bags: 

— Excuse me, what are you doing here? 

— I’m here for the apartment showing, the realtor said it was open. 

— But it can´t be truth! This apartments is not for rent!

At that moment, the real tenants returned with pizza boxes. Everyone laughed at the misunderstanding. She explained that in her country the “first floor” means the level above the ground. They invited her to stay for a slice of pizza, and the atmosphere became warm and friendly.

Weeks later, when she moved into the correct apartment, she hosted a housewarming party. She baked cookies and served lemonade, inviting the neighbors she had met by mistake. The funny story became the beginning of a friendly community.

Через несколько недель, когда она переехала в правильную квартиру, устроила новоселье. Испекла печенье, приготовила лимонад и пригласила соседей, которых встретила случайно. Забавная история стала началом дружного соседства.
