Практика переводов…

Мы тут только недавно, поэтому небольшая предыстория… Мы занимались переводом своих книг для Амазона, потом брат одного из авторов, который всем этим рулил, создал свое агентство. Ну, и так как мы общаемся, мы в курсе всяких забавных случаев, которые возникают в процессе перевода, и некоторыми прям хочется поделиться))

Из последнего… Работаем над переводом «Тайного паладина», и в процессе появилось понимание, что на американском рынке людям гораздо проще будет читать эту книгу с азиатскими именами. Тем более тематика, боевые искусства, очень даже подходит. В общем, нашли одного переводчика, который работает одновременно и с английским языком, и с японским и сели переделывать все имена по списку))

Если что, это уже сработало – эффективность тестовой выкладки английской версии выросла вдвое)))

Дальше скинем часть итогового файла, где именам из оригинальной истории предлагаются азиатские аналоги)) На наш взгляд получается довольно забавно, а вы что думаете? И, может быть, будут какие-то замечания по предложенным вариантам? Если да, то будем очень благодарны.

А теперь собственно обещанный список)) И последнее уточнение – большинство имен переделали на японские, а вот дварфам достались имена из монгольской группы. Со всем к ним уважением)))

Main squad:

Nick → Ryūke

Sergey → Hikomaru (означает огонь)

Alice → Kimiko (означает благородный ребенок)

Dan → Takashi (означает суровый или каменный)

(or since he's Korean, I also suggest Jae meaning “wealth, riches,” Jun, meaning “talented,” “handsome,” “ruler,” or “army,” depending on the character used)

Marika’s squad:

Marika Kral → Maneko Kisaki

(maneki means to invite, neko is a cat, so I thought it’d be funny that she has a combo of the two as she has a cat and was the one who basically invited the guys over :P) Kisaki (since “kral” reminds me of kraljica Serbian for queen, and kisaki is one of the readings for the kanji for queen)

Isla Black → Isa Kuro

Kuro (meaning “black”)

Vinni Sollers → Kandata Shinnosuke 

(Kandata is a character from a Buddhist story who goes to Hell because of his greed, and shinnosuke can loosely be translated to “he who helps death” or something like that)

The police:

Tel Schaumer → Taro Seigi 

(from taro meaning “root” and seigi meaning “righteous/just”)

Tom Mowley → Tadashi Masanori 

(from tadashii which can both mean “correct,” “right”, “true” or “loyal” depending on the kanji and masanori meaning “model of justice”)

Creevey Pickle → Daizo Maru

Maru (meaning “round”)

Nolan → Ryoku (meaning “green”)

Silver Wolf

Quinlan Zork → Quinlan (I like it xD) Zhi (Chinese for “wisdom, intellect”)

Other:

Victoria Gabes → Katsumi Jūken (meaning “guns and swords”)

Elijah Simmons → Eizen Seimon

Eizen (from ei meaning “eternity” and zen) Seimon (from sei meaning “system” and mon meaning “gate”)

Daren Mack → Ryō Dán 

Ryō (meaning “cooking” and is close to ryū meaning “dragon”) Dán (Chinese for “egg”... get it... because... because of the name of his inn? xD)

Ilys Naseri → Iyasu Naseri

Gigs and Cyrus Bowley → Yōhei and Kōhei Uji

Eve Locke → Yui Tomie (just thought it sounded cute)

Harris Dow → Date Nikihisa

Harward → Ito Watanabe (a common butler/old man last name xD)

The dwarves:

Klimb Masters → Benkei Shuichi

Benkei (name of this one really kickass Buddhist priest, the dude was a fucking legend, the guy died standing on his feet, full of arrows, and the enemies didn’t dare come closer to him cuz they weren’t sure if he was dead xD) Shuichi (from shu meaning “master” and ichi meaning “one”)

Aria Masters → Aria Shuichi

Vollos → Ganbatar (Mongolian for “steel hero” since he’s the oldest of them all here)

Glor Kaysens → Go Yoroi 

(general term for armor in Japanese; the term kaizen is very close to the original name and it means “improvement/betterment” and is also a very popular business/economic concept; I had an idea of giving the dwarves some Mongolian sounding names just to add diversity, so I suggest Gan/Bold meaning “steel”)

Sobers → Morita (meaning “wood fields”)

Ulf Kaysen → Sōga Horokeu

Sōga (means “claws and fangs”) or an Ainu name Horokeu which means “wolf”,

or Kiba from Naruto cuz his name translates to “fang”

Norna Koons → Bat-Erdene (Mongolian for “strong jewel” I thought it fit perfectly xD)
