The Esprit continued to evolve into the 90s with some vital improvements, such as a fuel injection intake, but its power reached a plateau by the middle of the decade. This prompted Lotus to replace the engine with a powerful twin-turbocharged V8 and a 6-speed manual gearbox; shape remained nearly identical, but a final design change was applied in 2002 before ending production in 2004.
